HIV 50+ Community Education Project
Free, self-paced, and community-led training for people living with HIV over 50. Learn how to manage chronic conditions, build advocacy skills, and connect with a national network.
NMAC is continuing the long tradition of bringing treatment and science to communities of color with the 2025 relaunch of NMAC’s HIV 50+ Community Education Project, available in both Spanish and English.
This self-paced online education offering stems from NMAC’s HIV 50+ Strong & Healthy program, which aims to provide resources, information, and opportunities for people living with HIV (PLWH) who are over 50, empowering them to become leaders and advocates for themselves and their communities.
Enhancing Technical Skills for Long-term and Lifetime Survivors of HIV
As people living with HIV age, they face new and complex health challenges, including managing multiple comorbidities (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), navigating stigma, and overcoming gaps in culturally competent care. Long-term and lifetime survivors often carry the additional burden of trauma, loss, and systemic neglect. This education platform provides an accessible, peer-informed approach to addressing those needs with dignity and empowerment.
The HIV 50+ Community Education Project aims to bridge the digital and health equity divide by providing high-quality, online learning to support older adults living with HIV in living vibrant, informed, and healthy lives.
Program Description: The HIV 50+ Community Education Project is designed to provide participants with the resources, information, and skills to manage and prevent comorbidities and make informed health decisions. Each module is developed by a team of peer educators, public health advocates, and practitioners to ensure it is informative and engaging.
Participants will have access to:
- A network of peers with monthly support calls
- One-on-one mentorship opportunities
- A certificate of completion for each module
Program Duration:
- Self-paced courses: 6 to 12 hours total, completed over several days or weeks.
- Structured programs: 4-month format including support calls, mentorship, and assessments.
Program Eligibility Criteria: Courses are led by trained peer educators, public health advocates, and practitioners. The HIV 50+ Community Education Project is open to 50+ Strong and Health Program scholars, program alumni, and members of the National HIV Aging & Advocacy Network (NHAAN).
Language Justice: In alignment with our commitment to language justice, all course materials will be offered in English and Spanish. We are working to expand access in additional languages, reflecting the diversity of our communities.
Purpose:
This online learning platform includes modules on HIV and diabetes, cardiovascular health, mental health, and HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND). It is designed to help PLWH over 50 and their providers better understand how to manage HIV and prevent comorbidities most common in older adults.
Community-centric:
One goal of the HIV 50+ Community Education Project is to connect older adults with HIV with local and national resources that will help them live healthier and more vibrant lives. Trainings encourage community connection, personal empowerment, and collective action. Participants are also invited to join NHAAN and engage in grassroots advocacy to shape the future of HIV and aging policy.
