December 20, 2011 2011 was a very busy year. On behalf of the board and staff of the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC), thank you for all that you do to fight HIV/AIDS. When future generations look back, hopefully this year will mark the start of the end of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Wouldn’t that be wonderful and amazing?! |
December 16, 2011 NMAC is extremely disappointed by Congress’ decision to not only reinstate the ban on funding for syringe exchange in its 2012 budget, but also its allocation of $5 million for widely discredited abstinence-only sex education programs. In a year when the global health community has come together in support of evidence-based interventions, which for the first time in history have the potential to bring an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Congress has ignored the recommendations of public health experts, and instead legislated on the basis of social politics. |
December 2, 2011 The following is a statement from National Minority AIDS Council Deputy Executive Director Daniel C. Montoya: As the global community came together to mark World AIDS Day yesterday, and President Obama honored the legacy of Ryan White in a speech at George Washington University, disturbing news reports surfaced surrounding a Pennsylvania boy who was denied admission to the Milton Hersey School simply because he is HIV-positive. |
December 1, 2011 On World AIDS Day, the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) is thrilled to stand with organizations across the U.S. and the globe in renewing its commitment to end this 30 year epidemic. We will not rest until this year’s theme of “Getting to Zero” is realized and this epidemic is over. For the first time in the history of our movement, we have the tools to accomplish this. |
December 1, 2011 More Musings From Paul Kawata. My generation stepped up to fight an epidemic that nobody cared about. We've endured the loss of countless friends and lovers. On World AIDS Day 2011, we can change the narrative of loss to one of victory. |
December 8, 2011 The National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) is returning to where it all began, Las Vegas, NV, for the 2012 U.S. Conference on AIDS! 25 years ago, NMAC was founded in a trailer park behind the Circus Circus hotel in Las Vegas. Next year, to honor our roots, we will be returning for the 16th annual U.S. Conference on AIDS. Don't miss out! Check back here for more information as it becomes available! |
February 14, 2011 The 2011 National HIV Prevention Conference will be held August 14-17 in Atlanta at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and the Marriott Marquis hotels. This year's NHPC abstract deadline - February 4 - is just around the corner. Learn more and submit today! |
January 24, 2012 A young reporter recently asked me “what was like in the olden days, before Protease Inhibitors and combination therapy?” I always find it difficult to truly express what happened. Sometimes I feel like a soldier who fought in some horrible war and I wonder if I will ever be able to recover from my experiences. |
January 10, 2012 For years I've enjoyed sharing my thoughts with NMAC's constituents and friends through my periodic "musings." In 2012, my writings -- Ending the Epidemic -- will reflect NMAC's efforts to realize its new mission and discuss the various changes brought about by the watershed moment in which our movement finds itself. Through these new messages, I will seek to share with all of you, more than just my general thoughts on the status of our movement, but concrete suggestions and analysis that, in my opinion, will position us to better achieve the goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
