PrEP FAQ
What is PrEP?
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is a medication taken before potential exposure to HIV to reduce someone’s chances of acquiring it. It is 99% effective at preventing HIV through sex, when taken as prescribed.
Who should take PrEP?
Sexually active adults or adolescents who are HIV negative. PrEP is for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or relationship status.
Is PrEP safe for women?
PrEP is considered safe for women, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, when prescribed by a healthcare provider and taken as directed. Talk to a healthcare provider to figure out which PrEP medication would work best for you.
What’s the difference between PrEP and PEP?
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is a medication routinely taken before potential exposure to HIV to reduce someone’s chances of acquiring it. PEP stands for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis and is an emergency medication used within 72 hours after possible HIV exposure and taken daily over a course of 28 days.
How to access PrEP
PrEP is covered by nearly all private insurance plans and most Medicaid expansion programs, making it free. This coverage extends to the medication itself, as well as essential services like lab tests (STI/HIV testing) and provider visits to get prescribed PrEP. Below is a list of clinics where you can get tested for HIV and other STIs and get prescribed PrEP.
Clinics offering PrEP Navigations services have a staff member who works with patients to review insurance, identify coverage/deductible gaps, and assist with enrollment in appropriate programs, such as co-payment coverage. Always call a clinic beforehand to verify costs associated with PrEP services before walking in or scheduling an appointment.
