Taking on HIV in the US: Leveraging the Power of Women
Location: Floridian BC, Third Floor

Supported by

Although women represent nearly half of all HIV infections globally, the number of women living with HIV disease in the United States is not well known or understood. Often characterized as “the changing face of AIDS,” women are described as a special population, but in some communities in the United States the rate of new HIV infection among women is staggering. The role of women, both affected and infected, in the fight against HIV is pivotal for changing the course of the disease for everyone. This seminar will describe the epidemic among women in the US, showcase effective programs and services in prevention and treatment, and discuss new strategies and efforts to engage women with HIV and those who care for women in this fight. 2009 - Educating HIV Positive Patients

Location: Floridian D, Third Floor

Supported by

Gilead has recognized the need to find new and interesting ways to educate today’s HIV patient. We are excited to be on the forefront of developing unique educational programs on a variety of issues that patients face each and every day in the HIV community. In addition, the profile of the HIV positive patient has changed and thus requires educational initiatives that target the needs of different populations. For example, today’s HIV patients are living longer and that means dealing with new health concerns like heart disease. Our hope is to provide you with the tools to educate patients in an engaging manner, and by doing so motivate them to take an active role in their healthcare. Please join us for this interactive presentation and see first-hand exciting new techniques that help educate today’s HIV patient.

Living Longer With HIV

Location: Room 316, Third Floor

Supported by

As people with HIV live longer as a result of advances in medicine, other factors such as family history and underlying risk of disease, co-morbid illness, drug interactions and resistance are important considerations that patients need to understand in order to maintain good health. That said, personal factors such as cultural influences, language barriers and patient literacy may present a challenge in patients seeking appropriate medical counseling and care. This seminar will focus on HIV and aging and co-morbid-related topics such as neurocognitive impairment and chronic kidney disease, as well as new community education resources from www.aPositiveLife.com that will help you communicate with your clients about living longer with HIV.

Special Issues in HIV Care

Location: Floridian A, Third Floor

While antiretroviral therapies can achieve undectable blood levels of the HIV virus, effective treatment and favorable clinical outcomes are often hindered by coinfections; behavioral, socioeconomic, and cultural factors; and access to care. Racial and ethnic minorities continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV, and women, especially of color, are a underserved population. Join distinguished faculty as they discuss up-to-date information on HIV management, particularly newly approved medications. The seminar will also address those populations disproportionately affected by HIV and at high risk for increased morbidity and mortality from HIV/AIDS.
