May 19 is National Asian and Pacific Islander (API) HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The Banyan Tree Project—a national campaign to fight HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination in API communities—is the lead for this day.
Each year, this day is commemorated with events around the country designed to promote the Banyan Tree Project goals.
In recognition of National API HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has created a National HIV/AIDS Observance Days Web site.
What happens on this day?
Organizations around the country dedicated to providing HIV/AIDS services to A&PIs host events in their communities to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS-related stigma.
According to the CDC, the number of APIs living with AIDS has climbed by more than 10 percent in each of the last 5 years. Sixty-seven percent of API men living with HIV/AIDS in 2005 are men who have had sex with other men. Eighty percent of API women living with HIV/AIDS in 2005 were infected through heterosexual contact.
